A Tool: Not a Fix-All
Red herrings are widely used to identify bots or inattentive respondents. But not all are created equal. We've reviewed many surveys where red herrings:
Confuse qualified participants
Get skipped due to fatigue or poor placement
Feel disconnected from the actual content
Even well-meaning checks can introduce friction. In healthcare, where respondents are often busy professionals, small missteps can lead to dropouts; worse, they may result in data that looks clean but lacks real integrity.
What Works: And What Doesn’t
The most effective red herrings strike a balance across three dimensions:
Contextual relevance
Cognitive plausibility
Clarity of purpose
Example:
“Which of the following is NOT a diagnostic imaging modality?”MRI, PET, CT, and a fabricated option like “Visual Spectrum Scan”
It fits the topic, is easy to catch for qualified participants, and avoids feeling like a trap. What we avoid:
Including multiple fake answers in a single list
Using pop culture or unrelated trivia
Relying on vague or tricky phrasing
Placing them in a cognitively demanding questions
Each of these increases the risk of false flags; worse, they can alienate strong respondents who feel tested rather than respected.
What Consulting Teams Should Know
If you're leading survey-based work for diligence, segmentation, or sizing, red herrings are likely part of your quality stack - even if you’re not directly aware.
But how they’re implemented matters. It’s worth asking:
Are they placed thoughtfully?
Are results monitored beyond right/wrong responses?
Are they tuned to your specific respondent audience?
Poorly applied red herrings can distort your data just as much as weak targeting or unclear screening logic.
